Surat Airport Launches ILBHS System to Streamline Baggage Handling Operations

Surat : The long-awaited In-Line Baggage Handling and Scanning System (ILBHS) has officially begun operations at Surat International Airport, marking a major milestone for the city’s growing aviation infrastructure. The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated on Wednesday by Ajay Bhardwaj, CEO of AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Limited (AAICLAS).

With the ILBHS now functional, air travelers at Surat Airport can expect a smoother and faster check-in experience. The system integrates baggage screening directly with the check-in conveyor line, automating the entire process of security scanning and baggage transfer to the aircraft. This means passengers no longer need to stand in separate queues for X-ray screening — their luggage will now be automatically scanned and seamlessly transferred to their respective flights through advanced conveyor and security systems.

Airport officials said the new facility would boost operational efficiency, passenger convenience, and security standards, aligning Surat Airport with leading national and global aviation hubs. The ILBHS is already being used at several major airports across India, and its introduction in Surat reflects the city’s emergence as a significant center for both domestic and international travel.

During his visit, Ajay Bhardwaj also met with representatives of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) to discuss the region’s long-standing demand for international cargo operations. SGCCI President Nikhil Madrasi highlighted that high-value exports such as diamonds, jewellery, and shrimp are currently routed through Mumbai. Starting direct cargo services from Surat would save time, reduce costs, and increase export efficiency.

Members of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) added that nearly 1,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables are sent from Surat to Mumbai each month for export. They assured that if international cargo services are initiated from Surat, the same volume could be shipped directly from the city, strengthening Surat’s position as a rising global export hub.

The launch of ILBHS and the growing push for cargo operations underline Surat’s rapid transformation — from a business powerhouse to an increasingly vital node in India’s aviation and trade network.
