Gandhinagar : In a major push toward digital governance, the Gujarat government has made it mandatory for all departments, semi-government bodies, and institutions in the state to accept digitally signed birth and death certificates as valid proof for every kind of official process.
The directive, issued by the Department of Health, Medical Services, and Medical Education, ensures that citizens no longer need to rely on physical copies or manual verification of these certificates.
According to the circular, all certificates are now issued through the Central Government’s Civil Registration System (CRS) Portal, which includes the digital signature of the registrar or sub-registrar responsible for each registration. Once generated, these certificates are automatically sent to citizens via email, and they can also be obtained directly from the local registrar’s office if required.
Previously, Gujarat handled birth and death registrations through the E-Olakh application, managed by the state’s Health Department. However, from September 1, 2025, all such registrations are being carried out exclusively through the CRS Portal, bringing uniformity and simplifying verification across India.
Officials said the move is aimed at ensuring authenticity, preventing forgery, and providing citizens with faster, paperless access to vital records. It also aligns with the broader Digital India and Digital Gujarat initiatives that promote efficiency and transparency in government services.
Citizens can now use these digitally signed certificates for a wide range of purposes — from school and college admissions to passport applications, property documentation, government schemes, and more.
By integrating with the CRS Portal, Gujarat becomes one of the leading states to fully adopt a national-level digital birth and death registration system, ensuring that records are easily verifiable anywhere in the country.
This initiative reflects the government’s vision to create a smart, transparent, and citizen-friendly administrative framework, where digital documents are legally recognized and instantly accessible.
